GET TO KNOW

Modern Citizen is a destination for the modern woman, built by women, for women defining what’s next. To them, “modern” is more than a style, it’s a mindset. Their mission is to help you look and feel classic yet current, and go places with ease, creativity, and power. They feature high quality, minimalist, on-trend clothing, accessories, beauty products, and home goods. They carry their own label along with a curated selection of other artisans – all at accessible price points. They aim to empower women by making refined style accessible without sacrificing quality. Most pieces are under $100.

Classic, not basic.

The team at Modern Citizen makes a point of differentiating a "classic" from a "basic". Most of what they offer they characterize as classics — pieces you can wear this season and next from the office to out, completely irrespective of your age. And that those items are what really form the foundation of a modern wardrobe. Modern Citizen believes that their difference is in the details. "We really live for that fashion moment, whether it’s a perfectly placed slit or an unexpected take on a trend. There’s always something a bit more special there than just the essentials. Our definition of the modern woman is reflected in our name. She’s ambitious, forward-thinking, a citizen of the world — an old soul with a modern mind."

FEMALE FOUNDER’S STORY

Founders Jessica Lee and Lizzie Agnew share their story: "We met at brunch in 2014 and bonded over (in no particular order):  spicy food, unsuccessfully learning Chinese, and the challenges and opportunities in fashion today - all classic brunch topics. As daughters of entrepreneurs, we each dreamed of building a company for and by modern women, and that dream came true with Modern Citizen.

Although fashion is one of the few industries that is largely dominated by women, unfortunately, it’s rarely in positions of senior leadership. I think that the more those environments can foster a culture of mentorship - women helping create more opportunities for other women - that addresses many of the ideals that are core to feminism.”
